The Laughing Buddha is inspired by Budai, a wandering 10th-century Chinese monk remembered for his joyful spirit, endless generosity, and contagious laughter.

Unlike monks who lived in isolation, Budai walked among ordinary people carrying a simple cloth sack filled with sweets, food, and gifts for children and the poor. Though he owned very little, he was believed to carry endless abundance within him.

His large belly became a symbol not of excess, but of happiness, contentment, forgiveness, and the ability to embrace life with an open heart. Through laughter and kindness, Budai taught that true wealth is not measured by possessions, but by peace, joy, and generosity of spirit.

Before his passing, legends say Budai revealed himself as an incarnation of Maitreya, the future Buddha of loving-kindness and hope.
