The Santo Niño, meaning “Holy Child Jesus,” is one of the most beloved symbols of faith and hope in the Philippines.

In 1521, during the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in Cebu, a small statue of the Child Jesus was gifted to Queen Juana after her baptism into Christianity. Soon after, conflict erupted, Magellan was killed, and the statue disappeared into history.

More than forty years later, when Spanish explorers returned to Cebu, they discovered the statue untouched inside a wooden box amidst the ashes of a burning village. Its miraculous survival through fire was seen as a divine sign, a symbol of protection, faith, and enduring hope.

Since then, the Santo Niño has remained deeply cherished by millions, celebrated through prayer, devotion, and the vibrant Sinulog Festival.
